        1. Apply to NAU.  Undergraduate application information  can be                             found here.  Prospective graduate students click here.

        2. Fill out the Instrumental Music Audition Application which can                                     be found here and mail it to the NAU Bands Office;

        4.  Prepare for the audition!  Preparatory lessons are available and encouraged with Prof. Carichner either in Flagstaff (Sunday-Tuesday) or Tempe (Wednesday-Saturday).  Aside from that, here is the list of suggested materials for the audition:

Tuba:

  • One complete, multi-movement work (concerto, sonata, or suite) from any historical period, e.g. Vaughan-Williams Concerto for Tuba, Gregson Concerto for Tuba, Broughton Concerto for Tuba, Hindemith Sonata, Marcello Cello Sonatas 1 or 2, Haddad Suite for Tuba, Wilder Effie Suite, Stevens Sonatina,
  • Two shorter works or etudes in contrasting style (may be individual movements from longer works).  e.g. Etudes: Kopprasch, Blazhevich, Rochut/Bordogni, Tyrrell, Gallay, Arban)
  • All major and minor scales, in quarter notes, quarter = 120 minimum
Euphonium:
  • One complete, multi-movement work (concerto, sonata, or suite) from any historical period, e.g. Works by Sparke, Curnow, Bach, and Marcello are all acceptable.  Other fine examples include the  Jacob Fantasia, Horovitz Concerto, Boccalari Fantasia di Concerto.
  • Two shorter works or etudes in contrasting style (may be individual movements from longer works) e.g. Etudes by Kopprasch, Blazhevich, Rochut/Bordogni, Tyrrell, Arban, Voxman
  • All major and minor scales, in quarter notes, quarter = 120 minimum

 

ALL materials may be requested at the audition, including sight-reading and a brief aural skills evaluation.  Prepare thoroughly, and do not hesitate to contact Prof. Carichner with questions.
